How Has The Depletion of Our Soils Affected Our Food Supply?

WonderBottom1laack of mineralsPlants take up nutrients contained in the soils in which they grow, especially minerals.  Plants do not make minerals, they get them from the soil, and if they are not in the soil, they are not in the foods we eat, so of course they are not in our bodies.  And nearly all other vitamins are dependent on minerals to be beneficial to us.

The alarming fact is that foods―fruits, vegetables and grains―now being raised on
millions of acres of land that no longer contain enough of certain needed nutrients, are
starving us―no matter how much we eat of them.

~ U.S. Senate Document 264

Tragically that document was released in 1936, we have a much more severe problem today.  In fact in 2006 the United Nations recognized a new type of malnutrition, stating that the overweight are just as malnourished as the starving.  It is not a lack of food, but the quality of food that is an issue.  Nearly every person in every country suffers from this malnutrition they call  Multiple Micro-nutrient depletion.

Our produce today may look the same, or may even be bigger, shinier and more aesthetically appealing, but looks can be deceiving.  In fact the manipulations to make foods look  better actually also make them less nutritious.  Something I will explain in a forthcoming post.

We all think we are eating healthy and getting what we need when we go through the produce aisles and pick up the fruits and vegetables to take home to our families.

However, as you can see they are very lacking in what our body needs.  Nearly every fruit and vegetable in supermarkets today do not have the nutrients they did 100 years ago and even more have less than they did just 50-60 years ago.

 Here are some more examples:

This certainly does not mean we should avoid fruits and vegetables, they still contain nutrients our bodies need, just not in the quality and quantity we expect and a plant based diet is our best bet to obtain them in our diet.

Because we are not getting the nutrients we need from our modern diet, we need to add them by consuming more nutritional products and supplements.
